A forgotten fisher's house turned sustainable beach escape

Placed on a stretch of sand on one of the Algarve’s many barrier islands, this abandoned fishers’ house looks out onto the calm waters of the lagoon and mainland beyond as they lap serenely up the sand towards its low walls. However, what began as a renovation seeking energy efficiency and contemporaneity soon became a voyage of discovery as false metal ceilings were removed to reveal the gorgeous beams of an umbrella roof construction. With the discovery rendering any thoughts of false ceilings a distant memory, the entire design was rethought around the new roofing structure, giving this 4-bed, 4-bath home an entirely new feel as ceilings were taken higher and other wooden elements added in.

A true beach house in every sense of the word, green-tinged turquoise was used throughout for a watery feel, with extra light brought in through indoor glass walls, and an energy efficiency unmatched by a new build ensured. The latter, which was no easy feat given the location of the house so close to the water, was achieved through the use of ecological, naturally insulating materials, hydraulic wall and underfloor heating, photovoltaic panels, and reinforced glass to guarantee that the rays reflecting off the water don’t overheat the home within. 

 A study on working with the old to build the new and advanced, this home went from forgotten to encompassing the ideals of the future.
